(Edited: The Mr. Linky box is now working!)
The Letters is the story of Sam and Hadley West, an estranged couple trying to survive the loss of their college-aged son.
Their story is told through a series of letters that Sam begins to write to Hadley as he embarks on a journey to Alaska, where the tragic death of their son occured. Hadley has moved out of their family home and is renting a small haunted cottage on the coast of Maine where she hopes to heal, and where she begins painting again.
At first, the letters make her uneasy, but Hadley eventually opens herself up to the idea of communicating with Sam and writes back. She doesn't see how Sam travelling to the spot where they lost their son will help either of them. But she finds that by reliving her son's death, she and Sam are forced to remember their life together and ultimately rediscover eachother.
As the story unfolds, we see how much Sam and Hadley really do love eachother, and it also shows us how it is possible for the soul to heal from even the most devastating circumstances. I can't imagine anything more tragic than losing a child, but Sam and Hadley begin the process of healing by way of mending their broken marriage. The story was beautifully written by a man and a woman, which brought the perspectives of Sam and Hadley to life. Although it was sad, the story was so full of hope that I had to keep reading until the end.
