My old friends from high school recently threw me a "Baby Warming" party - basically a baby shower/housewarming/something for the big sib combination soiree. Since I didn't need much in the way of new baby stuff, and housewarming presents are truly no fun to buy, a lot of the gifts ended up being presents for Hugo. The hubby got in on the action too, buying a Hot Wheels battery-operated race track for himself our son, which they loudly and obnoxiously play with on the daily. (I'm currently regretting the approval of that purchase...)
One of the most curious presents Hugo got was a Bilibo, from my friend (and former class pres) Bryan. As he described it in his card - "Hugo, Enjoy your big, orange, uh... thing." - well, that's probably the best description of it that I could give you also. Invented in Switzerland, (only Europe comes up with such wonderfully bizarre inventions) it's supposed to spur the imagination and fuel creative play, which leaves it's description and usage wide-open for interpretation. Hugo's current favorite usages for it are spinning and wobbling in it as a chair, using it as a tunnel for his Hot Wheels, sliding down the side, and placing it on his head like a helmet so that he turns into a "turtle."
The mom-friendly aspects? This thing is virtually indestructible, waterproof, dirtproof, snowproof, easy to clean, doesn't require batteries, and no assembly required. You can also get a Bilibo in a wide variety of colors that any finicky kiddo might desire, or that fits with your current playroom decor. The only bummer is that I really haven't seen them sold locally - but they are widely available on the interweb, and well worth the shipping wait, if you ask me. And if you're not sold yet, here's some pics of a happy Hugo demonstrating the "modified rocking chair" and the "turtle."
