There are two points in life when you're invited to a bazillion weddings around the same time: somewhere around your twenty-somethings when all your frat guy friends and sorority sisters from your college years realize that the "life is one big party" mantra no longer applies to them, and then again when you're in your fifty-somethings when your son and daughter's playdates of yesteryear are struggling to remember who you were and why their mom insists that you get an invite. I'm currently at point 1.
It's particularly fun for me to go to weddings at this point, not just for the tear-jerking vows, great food, and electric slide dance-a-thons, but also because, currently, Andrew and I are one of the few couples in our group of friends with an ultra-adorable kiddo to show off. Hugo always wows people with his big toothy smile, curly blond shag-top, and witty toddler-isms, but there's no harm in taking the wrapping-the-guests-around-his-pinky-finger factor up a notch by adding chic, wedding-ready, mini-macho man duds - which is exactly what I plan to do.
So, much to Andrew's amazement, I diligently spent 2 precious hours last night scouring the web for said garb. I finally decided on a Wonderboy shirt and funky matching tie from Modernseed. Prices were t.b.e for the couture-esque style that I was going for, but I like the versatility of the clothes: mix it with some slacks or khakis for a dressy look, pair it with some dark denim for a casual evening out on the town, throw on a pair of shorts for the neighborhood picnic, and add or eliminate the tie where applicable.
2 hours, internet eyeball, and a couple bucks later, I'm totally stoked and excited to get my purchase in a couple days. But, it got me thinking about ways I could keep my trend-setter spunky without all that e-shopping drama. Some things I think may go over well:
- Splurge on one great accessory. Get him an awesome belt, a cheeky fedora, a fresh-looking bowtie, etc. and jazz up the blandness in that's already in his closet.
- Combine your taste with your Mom's. Gramma wants the collegiate sweater vest, you want the camo cargos. Throw them together - you might be surprised.
- Put your ironing board to use. Toss the little man's jeans under a hot iron and to make his everyday pants and shorts look neat and spiffy.
- Get graphic. Jaunt over to Michael's, pick up a black and white iron-on print of whatever - animal, truck, swirlies, you name it - and add fun pics in non-traditional locations. (lower sides, upper back, etc.)
- Layer up. The biggest injustice you can do to a cool T-shirt is let it go unnoticed. Instead of using it as an undershirt below a long-sleeved oxford, throw it on top.
- Don't overgroom. "All the best laid plans are...." well, I don't really know that adage, but basically boys will be boys. So don't make the integrity of your trendy ensemble entirely dependent on it's ability to stay put. Don't give him a hairdo that won't look good when undone, don't tuck in his shirt if you don't have to - it'll only become untucked... things like that.
Have any other neat ideas on little boy fashion? I'm always fishing for ideas to keep Hugo looking bold and flashy!
